Tips for the New Forest

The New Forest is a wonderful place to explore with a dog but it does come with a few things worth knowing before you head out.

  1. Ponies & Cattle

The animals you see roaming freely are wild and should never be approached or fed. Keep your dog on a lead around them at all times, as even a calm pony can kick if startled by an excited dog.

Please adhere to the New Forest Code

  2. Adders

Adders are common in the New Forest, particularly on heathland during the warmer months. They tend to bask in sunny spots on paths and in bracken. Keep dogs on leads in these areas and seek veterinary attention immediately if you suspect a bite.

  3. Ticks

The forest is a high-risk area for ticks year-round, but particularly in spring and summer. Check your dog thoroughly after every walk, paying close attention to ears, paws and underbelly. Speak to your vet about preventative treatments before your visit.

  4. Ground nesting birds

Between March and August, many birds nest on the ground across heathland areas. Dogs running through these areas can cause serious disturbance, so keep them close and stick to marked paths where possible.

  5. Seasonal closures

Some car parks and paths close during nesting season. It is worth checking the Forestry England website before heading out.

  6. Water

Streams and ponds are plentiful and most dogs will want to take a dip. Always carry fresh drinking water as standing water can carry bacteria and algae that may be harmful.

  7. Heat

The open heathland offers very little shade in summer. Head out early in the morning or later in the evening on hot days and always carry water.
