New Forest Weekend Breaks: How to Avoid the Crowds and Love Summer
You’ve got a weekend break in the New Forest booked this summer. It’s just the two of you, you’re looking forward to a romantic couple of days in the heart of the National Park but how do you enjoy the summer without the crowds?
The first thing is, remembering that the New Forest will be here to explore next time so knowing you needn’t do it all at once gives you the chance to slow down and go with the flow.
If you’re seeking a relaxing reset, plan to come back to the busier attractions and save this weekend break for quiet morning walks, relaxing together in our country garden and romantic dinners reconnecting at The Terrace.
Knowing where to go, and when, can transform a good escape into a truly memorable one, and here’s how…
The early bird catches the worm
A great way to avoid the crowds? Start your day before everyone else. Get out on peaceful morning walks and wanders.
Getting up and out gives you time to enjoy quiet mornings wandering around our local villages, more opportunity to spot wildlife, and our wild heath-covered landscape looks particularly beautiful first thing. Dew-covered heather sprawling into ancient woodland; the morning light creeping through the canopy, the crisp coolness of the forest before the midday sun.
Take a scenic morning drive to the Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary, take the short walk to the viewing platform over the meadow to capture the roaming deer. What a special way to start the day.
Whilst the rest of the New Forests visitors are heading out, you can return to our Beaulieu hotel for coffee and brunch. Spend time relaxing and unwinding in our English country garden.
Swap tourist favourites with hidden places
Theres a reason why our National Park’s tourist top spots are so popular; but for others that just means there’s far more to discover. Often the hotspots are the easiest to access, so delving a little further unveils other, hidden treasures.
Quieter, lesser-known walks and woodland trails, local independent shops, boutiques and art galleries to find and peaceful country lanes to discover.
There are many bustling towns and villages around Beaulieu to discover, but why not slow down and explore Beaulieu itself. No need to find parking, whilst others head out for the day, simply walk from the hotel and explore our local area.
We have charming laneways, local shops, quaint cafes and beautiful riverside walks. Wander to Buckler’s Hard, the 18th century shipbuilding village, sit beside the river watching the roaming donkeys and ponies.
Connect with the New Forest through food
From forest to fork – this is how we like to showcase our British dining menu at The Terrace, with handpicked local produce and homegrown ingredients from our very own kitchen garden wherever possible and dishes, always inspired by the seasons. Anniversaries celebrated, special birthdays marked and romantic dinners enjoyed - just because. There needn’t be a rhyme or reason to dine at The Terrace during your weekend break.
Fall for local favourites like ChalkStream trout from the waters of the River Test and Lyburn Farm cheese – a family farm on the edge of the New Forest.
In our country pub, Monty’s is a change of pace once again, welcoming muddy paws and wellies to find comfort and rest after long forest walks or days of cycling – this is where games are played, catch ups are best and quick drinks turn into long evenings and heart feasts together.
Grow with the Flow
On our Grow with the Flow weekend break, we encourage you to find joy in slowing down and reconnecting with nature. Our country garden will be your reset; a place to find calm away from the hustle and bustle.
With your break you’ll receive discount on local activity bookings, and a Bellord and Brown picnic hamper so what better way to enjoy it all than on a New Forest adventure.
Hire bikes and set off on your own exploration. Cycling means you avoid the busy car parks, and you can escape the crowds and find your own peaceful places. Cycle along quieter roads, sit and listen to the birds and watch the ponies and cycle between villages, visiting the quieter pubs and lesser-known independent cafes. Cycling slows you down and gives you to freedom to explore.
Slower evenings and time together
Slow travel is not about ticking it all off your list in one go. The New Forest will always be here for weekend breaks. Knowing this takes the pressure off during busy seasons and allows you to simply enjoy getting away together.
It’s about finding new places and experiencing memorable moments, together. You needn’t visit every honeypot or tourist attraction to do that. Instead, spend evenings enjoying sunset walks along the river, long lunches in the garden and relaxed dinners reconnecting without needing to travel far at all. And when you do, go early or later in the day to avoid the busier times.
Don’t avoid our beautiful New Forest National Park, just experience it differently.
