Can you tell us a little bit about Wild New Forest?
Wild New Forest Guided Tours is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company. We run a series of guided walks and boat tours across the New Forest, with funds raised going directly into research and conservation efforts. We’re passionate about wildlife, having spent a lifetime working in and around the New Forest with some of the amazing specialist species found here.
What do you enjoy most about your work and the New Forest?
I love being outdoors, surrounded by nature. I especially enjoy syncing with the rhythms of the Forest—no two seasons are the same. We’re fortunate to work with people who share our passion for wildlife and the outdoors. The New Forest is wonderful at any time of year; there’s always something new to see and learn.
What can we expect to see in the New Forest in the winter?
The Forest has a remarkable mix of wildlife during the winter months. The New Forest is internationally important for fungi, with over 2,700 species recorded—there’s always plenty to see! We also see the arrival of thousands of birds escaping colder conditions to the east, spending the winter with us. Whether along the coast, on the heath, or in the woodlands, we host a diverse range of species enjoying our milder winters. With five species of deer across the New Forest, they can often be seen snoozing in quiet woodland clearings or feeding out on the heath.
What makes the New Forest unique?
The unique blend of habitats—from ancient woodland to coastal salt marsh—along with free-roaming livestock, creates an environment unlike any other in the UK. Combined with rich history and ancient traditions, the New Forest is truly a special place.
What’s your favourite thing to see during a walk in the Forest?
I love the sheer variety of life here in the New Forest. I’ve spent most of my life walking and observing wildlife here, yet I still frequently see things I’ve never seen before. We’re all learning constantly. Even on a quiet day, the beautiful scenery, fresh air, and tranquillity make every walk a pleasure.
