Discovering Beaulieu River: Tranquillity & Adventure
Welcome to Beaulieu, let’s take a trip on the water.
Serene and peaceful, our country house hotel sits next to the picturesque tidal Beaulieu River, which winds its way to the fascinating 18th century shipbuilding village of Buckler’s Hard and then continues out into The Solent.
It can be easy to associate the New Forest National Park with ancient trees and heathland, but there is nature and wildlife in abundance, including that on our coastline nearby and here, on our riverside. Being in nature is calming and reduces stress, triggering the parasympathetic nervous system, the internal system responsible for the body's 'rest and digest' response.
So, it is no doubt why the quaint and beautiful village of Beaulieu in the heart of the New Forest National Park is one of the most popular destinations.
Despite its size, this peaceful waterside village is bustling with life, with plenty to see and do, whether you’re dreaming of an action-packed New Forest weekend break or a midweek retreat to simply relax. Home to our country house hotel and village pub, independent shops and boutiques, as well as the renowned National Motor Museum, Palace House and Beaulieu Abbey, let’s not forget about the wonderful experiences to be had on and along the tranquil river.
With the expert guidance of New Forest Activities, couples, families and groups can take to the water for wonderful paddling excursions
On their New Forest River Explorer experience, qualified coaches will take you out in open Canadian canoes or kayaks, teaching you how to confidently paddle and explore hidden creeks and travel along the water’s edge; enjoy meandering and taking in the tranquillity of the forest from the water and spot wildlife as you go.
Guests of our New Forest hotel can access an exclusive 10% off bookings with New Forest Activities – simply look out for the discount code in your confirmation email or ask one of our team members for further information.
We are a dog-friendly hotel
Which is why we are delighted to be hosting a Summer Dog Walk this August, starting at The Montagu Arms Hotel and taking you along the river to Buckler’s Hard.
A wonderful way to explore the local area, meet like-minded dog owners, and bond with your four-legged friend; we’re inviting our guests and locals alike to join us on the 21st August, and take the opportunity to enjoy an exciting new route, whether you’re on a weekend break or taking your daily dog walk.
Before the walk begins, pop in to our New Forest hotel for complimentary tea, coffee and dog treats, ensuring all dog walkers and pooches are fuelled up, then, enjoy the 2¼ mile leisurely walk from our village to Buckler’s Hard along the wonderfully scenic footpath that borders the North Solent Nature Reserve.
There will be the opportunity to enjoy similar refreshments on the return journey, as well as a Jude's dog ice cream for a refreshing finish.
About the walk
The walk is 4 ½ miles in total, mostly along level gravel or hard-packed footpath, beside fields and woodland, with an optional riverside detour which can be muddy underfoot.

If it’s a peaceful adventure and some local history you’re looking for
Walk or drive to the wonderful 18th century shipbuilding village of Buckler’s Hard and stay for the museum, the very spot where boats for Nelson’s Navy were once built.
Entry to the village is free, and includes access to the Shipwright’s Cottage, St Mary’s Chapel, the Agamemnon Exhibition in the Shipwright’s Workshop, The Captain’s Table and Master Builder’s House Hotel. There is a small admission charge for the museum which allows you you to step back in time with its reconstructed cottage displays at this unqiue and beautiful haven on the edge of the Beaulieu River.
For anyone hoping to cruise on the river rather than paddle, a Buckler’s Hard River Cruise is highly recommended – inviting you to step aboard for a peaceful 30 minute boat trip along one of the few privately owned tidal rivers in the UK.
Enjoy your weekend break or city-escape beside the Beaulieu River; it’s a haven where you can spend time on or next to the water, soothe a busy mind, sleep soundly and nourish your body with delicious dishes inspired by the forest and the seasons.
