New Forest walks within 30 minutes of Beaulieu

When you visit the New Forest National Park you can’t help but want to explore, and for those who love to ramble, stroll or hike, we have an abundance of options when it comes to walking routes near our Beaulieu hotel.

From right on our doorstep to short scenic drives away, you’ll find just what you’re looking for when it’s time to set foot in nature and venture into our ancient woodland.

When you’re on a weekend break in the New Forest you don’t want to travel far to feel part of nature and you don’t need to. Our Beaulieu hotel is in the heart of it all, inviting you to slow down and reset with time spent under the trees and taking in our most beautiful landscapes.

Beaulieu Village walk

NA miles / as long as you wish

Start: Montagu Arms Hotel

Walks don’t always need miles and times set against them, our hotel sits in the heart of a picture-postcard village and while many like to set out on waymarked walks, often our guests also love to wander around the village itself.

Deadline-free, with a number of artisan gift shops, boutiques and independent cafes to stop in at, hours can be spent simply enjoying this peaceful place we call home.

As a dog-friendly hotel we also understand how important a daily walk is for our guests bringing their four-legged friends so some of these routes may be favourable depending on the length or type of walk you’re looking for.

Beaulieu to Buckler’s Hard

4 miles (out-and-back)

Start: Montagu Arms Hotel

A favourite among many of our guests and our very own team, walk straight from our hotel to the scenic Buckler’s Hard where you can discover the fascinating historic shipbuilding village, a maritime museum, pub and tearoom.

The walk itself is an out-and-back route that takes you from Beaulieu village along the tidal Beaulieu River, over boardwalks, marsh and through woodland, with the chance to spot native, rare wildlife.

Beaulieu Road to Denny Wood

3 miles (loop)

Start: Beaulieu Road train station – 7-minute drive from hotel

A lovely little loop for all ages and abilities, this local walk will take you through woods but also across heath and moorland, for an all-encompassing but not too taxing New Forest ramble and taste of what the National Park has to offer. Perfect for an afternoon dog walk or a shorter loop for families with young children less accustomed to distance.

Lodge Heath, Lady Cross Inclosure and Beaulieu Heath Circular

14 miles (loop)

Start: Roundhill Campsite – 9-minute drive from hotel

For walkers looking for a longer hike, runners in training or mountain bikers looking for a great circuit, this one’s worth saving.

There is a short section of road, but the route takes you predominantly along gravel forest track, making it ideal on wetter days, and through areas of beautiful scenery and notably, past a former WWII airport.

Furzey Lane Walk

3.3 miles (loop)

Start: Furzey Lodge – 5-minute drive from hotel

Don the wellies or the walking boots on this family-friendly walk through our ancient woodland with easy parking, offering a great opportunity to spot wildlife including deer and New Forest ponies.

A gently undulating trail, perfect for young families and dog walks, take in the sights and sounds of the tranquil New Forest on this beautiful walking trail near Beaulieu, with some muddy areas but generally good during wetter periods.

Tall Trees Trail: Blackwater Arboretum

1.5 miles (loop)

Start: Blackwater car park - 22-minute drive from hotel

It may be short but it’s sweet, this popular trail is a must when you visit the National Park; inviting you to take in our New Forest’s towering giants planted during the 1850s; Douglas firs and redwoods impress on this unforgettable forest trail that is wonderfully accessible.

The trail itself is a smooth, gravelled surface with a gentle slope with frequent places to stop and rest, plus ample car parking, toilets and a picnic area. To start the walk, cross the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive and walk under the carved oak archway and follow the trail to see the New Forest’s tallest trees.

Whether you’re on a couples break or you’re on a weekend away with your family, or your dog, our New Forest hotel is perfectly situated for short strolls or day-long adventures. Surrounded by beauty on all sides, you don’t need much encouragement to get out and breathe in the fresh forest air and capture a slice of this special place for yourself.

We’ll see you soon, happy walking.
